Modern Coup Studio: Ever Worked With a 2-Year Old?
Hand Cut & Stamped Modern Coup Leather Labels
It was a busy week in the studio. I’ve been working on a batch of 14 totes in the medium and small size. I find that working on certain aspects of the bag helps me get things done, even though there is a lot of repetition. For example, my goal for one day would be to sew all the zippers and linings for the totes. At the end of the day, I feel that I have accomplished what I set out to do.
Not all days are so fruitful though. As some of you know, I work in a small space at my parent’s home in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver. My mom takes care of my 2 year old son, while I work. He recently does not want me to do anything, but to play with him. The concept of ‘working from home’ is a difficult concept for a child to understand. After many attempts at explaining to him that I have to work, I decided to try involving him in what I do.
What you see above are the leather labels that go onto the inside of the bags. I first hand cut all of them to size and gave them to my son. Then I would ask him to hand me one and I would stamp it, ask him for another one and stamp it and repeat this for 20 labels. He seemed to really like helping me. I told him he can go play and when I need his help, I’ll call him. He really liked that.
I think I get to spend more time with my son than most parents I know, so I’m really lucky. Some days I get a lot done and some days a little. At the end of the week, it seems to all work out.
Have a great weekend everyone!
This is the solid brass stamp I custom ordered for Modern Coup. It is a real beauty. I stamp it on thick vegetable tanned leather in a natural colour.
